India was the first country in the world to formulate the national family planning program in the year 1952 with the objective of “ reducing the birth rate of the extent necessary to stabilize the population at a level consistent with requirement of National economy”.3 In India, more than 75% of pregnancies are unplanned and a quarter of them are undesired.4Annually almost 11 million abortions take place in the country, and more than half of these are unsafe, accounting to high maternal morbidity and mortality rates.5
